It’s a tough pill to swallow, but one we all need to learn at some point in life: we’re the ones making our own bed. Nobody else has the power to make my life choices.
- The quality of my life is very much up to me.
- The quality of my health is very much up to me.
- The quality of my relationships is very much up to me.
Oh, I might TRY to blame someone else for my wrong decisions, or I might TRY to put the responsibility for myself off on another person… but that’s always a huge mistake.
Watch yourself for the tendency to say things like “I’d love to eat better, but it’s impossible in my family” or “How can I possibly workout on a regular basis when I have to take care of everybody else?”
The airlines tell you to put your own oxygen mask on first.
If YOU don’t take care of YOU… who will?
Christians can especially have trouble with this concept. We’re supposed to be self-sacrificing and not care about our own comfort… right? Yes, we are to serve others… but scripture says “Love your neighbor as yourself”… not INSTEAD of yourself.
