We’ve been asked to help generate publicity for The Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk and are happy to be a part of that effort. Here’s the scoop:

The movement is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research.

Volunteers become champions in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are walks in more than 600 communities. A typical Alzheimer’s Memory Walk
is a 2-3 mile walk held on a weekend morning in the fall.

By teaming up with the Alzheimer’s Association, you can walk with a purpose – and move us closer to a world without Alzheimer’s. Together, we can MOVE a nation.

Get involved. Show that you care. Help a great cause.

My boy, Zebadiah, is only six years old and we had to buy glasses for him this year. I hate to see kids that young experiencing physical problems. His mother’s side has a history of needing glasses at an early age, so I got off my tangent of these darned computer screens ruining our children’s eyes–he plays PC learning games quite often.

Once I got past the emotional anguish it was time for the financial end. Figuring that he would be tough on frames, we bought the twistable type. All told, those glasses cost about $300. They were broken within a few days. Fixed. Broken again a week later. Fixed. Broken again…

At first I surmised that Zeb was being careless. Now I’m beginning to think that they are just poorly made frames. They broke again when we were in Florida and we bought him a spare pair at Walmart (another $250.) These are holding up for him while the others are being repaired again. Unbelievable.

One area that I have been reluctant to shop via the internet is eyeglasses, but I am about ready to change that. The Clark Howard radio show spoke well about a company called Zenni Optical and a set of bendable titanium glasses for Zebadiah are going for $24.95 at their website. The old adage is that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is…but this may be a case of wonder meeting reality. Zenni says that their prices are so low because there is no middleman. They sell what they make directly to the consumer.

I am absolutely so tired of shelling out big bucks for inferior products that I’m ready to take the leap and try a different path. That’s my RoadTurn for the day. How about you?

We are back from Florida and darned glad of it. These old mountains have been calling my name. Fresh air is a good thing. I have received the final approval to go ahead and write that master’s thesis and the subject could not be more pertinent right now: Home.

On the making a living side of life, I have been leaning towards more education in computer technology or computer applications. Our school is in severe need of help along the lines of network design and layout. I know enough about it to be dangerous, but a little training could flip the switch and allow me to be of real value here.

The definitely best site that I have found for information on network certification programs is at this link: Cisco certification. Information Technology is a field that offers a whole lot of possibility. My own consternation is deciding where to jump in. I know that I love working with computers and exploring their potential, but the problem is that I like everything about them. I enjoy setting up an access point as much as I do laying out a website. No one can be an expert at everything, though, so to pick a point and drill in seems to be the wisest move.

That is where the Cisco Learning Network site is especially valuable. It gives information on career paths, training and certification requirements, current news about the IT business, and a social learning network to trade ideas with other IT pros and students.

If you have an idea that Information Technology could play a part in your RoadTurn, then check it out and I’ll see you there.

There was a time when I enjoyed staying in hotel rooms and eating out regularly. Maybe it’s just me getting older, but somehow the whole deal has lost most of its flair. I’m popping another Claritin D as we speak, trying to fend off the headache and sneezing that comes with almost every hotel experience. Why is that? Am I just getting older or is it environmental factors?

My allergies are bothersome, but my son has one that is lethal: He is allergic to peanuts, cashews, and a list of other nuts and legumes. The night we discovered it he had eaten only a sliver of a cashew and we had to call an ambulance. The poor little guy takes it well, but it scares me silly. Every restaurant experience begins with a discussion about whether they use peanut oil for cooking and are there any nuts in the dishes or breads we wish to order. By the way–one of the children’s favorite fast-food places, Chik-Fil-A, uses peanut oil. Bummer.

I spoke with a chef at Disney this week. He said that when he started working there 15 years ago it was a rarity to have someone inquire about food allergies. Now he is seeing about 150 customers per week who need special attention and advise. What is going on? Is it the pesticides we are using? Is it because of genetic crop-building procedures? Talk about roadturns–this one is going in the wrong direction.

Our son’s doctor recommended that he wear a medical alert wristband. Plenty of people do that for special medical conditions and it is something that paramedics and others know to look for. Searching for the right one for Zach, I found that the variety of choices available for Medical ID is impressive. There is even a Medical Watch available. The one that fits him best is the necklace with a pendant. Mama said gold. I said silver. Zach gets gold.

Since he is too young to really understand the situation, though, we took it a step further. We made up a button to pin on his shirt that says, “Don’t Feed Me, Ask Mama First.” It all sounds a bit much perhaps, but if you would have been there to see the boy in the hospital that night you would understand.

I love creativity. Even when I don’t agree with the statement being made, I can admire the thought and effort that goes into a creative work. Especially, I enjoy seeing what folks can do with this relatively new medium called the world wide web. The possibilities are seemingly endless.

Take a subject like bed bugs, for instance. Do they even exist? The old before bed salute says, “Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.” I envisioned them as large beetle-like insects when I was small, but never did find one under my covers…thank God. Bed bug aficionados, though, tell us that they look like this micro photo. Personally, I had begun to think that the bed bugs scare story is just a way to sell foam mattresses. It got me to buy foam for the kids. You can’t be too careful with your babies.

Back to creativity, here’s a site that tells you all about bed bugs and disease. It is appropriately called bedbugsguide.com. Note that the layout is entirely simple, but is stocked with helpful FAQ’s:

Signs of Bed Bugs

Mattress Covers

Things that don’t work

Can I get a disease from bed bugs?

Do I have to throw my mattress away?

These are all excellent bits of information for someone who is concerned about not being able to “sleep tight.” A distasteful subject, perhaps, but a germane one. What caught my attention–and this is for those of us who have yet to win a national talent contest, but still need to eat–is that the site is a no-frills layout that offers basic information and is supported by links to those who offer the goods or services that may be required to fight the bed bug nightmare. In a nutshell, a site like this can earn a regular income for the owner and offer something valuable to the reader. Ergo: everyone wins.

I like it when that happens. I know that there are web purists amongst us who disdain any attempt to make a few bucks from honest labor, but hey, they are just like the opera purists who turn their noses up at Paul Potts and popera. To each his own. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. That’s all.

July is vacation time for me. It’s always been like that. My dad’s lumber mill shut down for two weeks every July so all the employees could celebrate Independence Day, go fishing, travel, and take a break. For us, that often meant driving cross country to visit family. I love this time of year.

My crew’s tradition is a trip to Disney World. Usually we get a room on property and focus on the parks, but there is no lack of things to do in Orlando .

If we lived on the West Coast, I guess we would be going to the original Disney Land park and worrying about things to do in Los Angeles, but we used to live near Orlando and have a pretty good grip on the scene there. I’ve never been to Disneyland and barely to Los Angeles. If we headed that way, I’d be calling up Trusted Tours and Attractions for a little help.

Disney World has pretty well grown on us. At first, I wasn’t too keen on the place–high prices and crowds. It didn’t take long strolling through the countries at Epcot, though, and sampling the amazing food available there to make me a believer. Now, I get about as excited as the kids about going. We discovered that Mexico is an ideal place from which to view the fireworks. My most memorable vacation was at the outdoor restaurant there watching the fireworks finale and holding one child by the hand and the other in my arms. Sweet.

If you’re heading into unknown parts this season, check out the Trusted Tours newsletter or check out their online travel guides.

Maybe you want to see the Metropolitan museum of art. Whatever your desire, Trusted Tours and Attractions is giving away a handheld GPS and the newsletter sign-up will qualify you for the drawing. Well, it would until June 30th–that offer may have changed by now. Check out the Trusted Tours newsletter to find out.

In this “see it to believe it” post is a link to a site that makes the shopping easy, while advertising some unbelievable rates.

The company is GetMeCallingCards.com, and they are a big time clearinghouse for the issuers of cards that allow you to make long distance calls, even overseas calls, without making a run on the bank. Check this out–they offer cards that work in 153 countries. How many countries are there, anyway? But, I digress. For instance cards that allow you to call from the U.S. to the United Kingdom begin at $1.99 and offer rates of–get a load of this–zero cents connection fee and zero cents per minute for unlimited calling.
And these aren’t regular payday loans; according to the ad, you can even get a Faxless Payday Loan. I had to go to the website and check it out.

Apparently, there is no credit check and no co-signer, but you do need a steady job and a bank account. The company provides an online form and they say that the customer can get approved in as little as one hour. Two things I didn’t find: How long it takes to get the cash, after approval, and the interest rate on the loan. The site says that interest varies by state.

You don’t need a loan yourself, you say? Here’s an idea: The next time your mooching buddies come over to hit you up for a loan, just give them the URL to Pay Day Loans!

Any of you who just doesn’t feel that you yet have all the credit you need and deserve, boy do I have the site for you. Instead of waiting for that perfectly suited offer to arrive in your mailbox, you can be proactive and go search for the exact terms and benefits you desire. For example…

Some credit cards are appealing because of their low interest rate, others because they are no-fee cards, still others offer special cash-back incentives…the list goes on. Furthermore, some cards are best-suited for students, some for businesses, some for frequent travelers–you get the drift.

Here’s a site that will allow you to preview benefits by category or by issuer. You can also find a list of articles about credit cards and how to choose them wisely. Let’s face it: Credit can be a good thing (it is almost a necessity in our high-tech world) or it can be a burden–it all depends on how you use it.

The credit industry is always getting ratings on you, here’s a chance to get a rating on them. Just go to credit card rating and start comparing the possibilities. Happy shopping!

True story: I once shared a cab with a woman who was on assignment for the “Department of Justice.” She had given me that little tidbit of information freely, but to know the details of her important and pressing business–well “she could tell me, but then she’d have to kill me.” I was happy to remain blissfully ignorant of such grave affairs, but couldn’t help but be impressed by her obvious privy and importance.

So what? Glad you asked.

There is a new television show premiering on your viewing screen as we speak (launched June 1st.) According to USA Network’s information site, the show “is an all-new crime drama from USA Network starring Mary McCormack as Mary Shannon, a U.S. Marshal attached to the highly secretive Federal Witness Protection Program (WITSEC).”

It goes like this: Mary works in New Mexico–a great place to get a new lease on life. Her job is to assist federal witnesses in the arduous task of becoming someone else so that they can remain amongst the living. These people are invariably unpopular with someone. That’s the main concept.

Like all good stories, though, there are subplots and plenty of complications. For instance: Mary has a a partner, Marshall, who is a “polar opposite.” They disagree often, but somehow it all works out in the end. Are they in romantic denial? Probably. Not only that, but Mary has a family. Mary has friends. Can she tell them what she does for a living? NO! She would have to kill them, silly. You can see how plenty of fun can be built around that one.

What’s my assignment in this ordeal? I’ve been asked to tell you about USA Network’s new original series In Plain Sight, then leave the room while you try to find Mary… in Plain Sight. Deal?
