Don’t let the bed bugs bite…

I love creativity. Even when I don’t agree with the statement being made, I can admire the thought and effort that goes into a creative work. Especially, I enjoy seeing what folks can do with this relatively new medium called the world wide web. The possibilities are seemingly endless.

Take a subject like bed bugs, for instance. Do they even exist? The old before bed salute says, “Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.” I envisioned them as large beetle-like insects when I was small, but never did find one under my covers…thank God. Bed bug aficionados, though, tell us that they look like this micro photo. Personally, I had begun to think that the bed bugs scare story is just a way to sell foam mattresses. It got me to buy foam for the kids. You can’t be too careful with your babies.

Back to creativity, here’s a site that tells you all about bed bugs and disease. It is appropriately called bedbugsguide.com. Note that the layout is entirely simple, but is stocked with helpful FAQ’s:

  • Signs of Bed Bugs
  • Mattress Covers
  • Things that don’t work
  • Can I get a disease from bed bugs?
  • Do I have to throw my mattress away?

These are all excellent bits of information for someone who is concerned about not being able to “sleep tight.” A distasteful subject, perhaps, but a germane one. What caught my attention–and this is for those of us who have yet to win a national talent contest, but still need to eat–is that the site is a no-frills layout that offers basic information and is supported by links to those who offer the goods or services that may be required to fight the bed bug nightmare. In a nutshell, a site like this can earn a regular income for the owner and offer something valuable to the reader. Ergo: everyone wins.

I like it when that happens. I know that there are web purists amongst us who disdain any attempt to make a few bucks from honest labor, but hey, they are just like the opera purists who turn their noses up at Paul Potts and popera. To each his own. If you don’t like it, don’t do it. That’s all.
