The world’s first Christmas card

From the British Postal Museum, comes a picture of the first-ever commercial Christmas card. Designed by John Calcott Horsley, 1000 of these cards were printed in 1843. Of the few remaining, one sold for over $17,000 at auction in 2005.
The advertisement for the cards, printed in the Athenaeum newspaper, read: Just published. A Christmas Congratulation Card: or picture emblematical of Old English Festivity to Perpetuate kind recollections between Dear Friends.
Let me take this chance to wish all of you the best Christmas ever. Here in Appalachian Kentucky, many of us are seeing the signs of something really special on the way…let us press on to 2008, in anticipation that the best is yet to come.
To read more about the card, visit the Postal Museum website. I found this link, and further information, in a newsletter from the fine folks at Just Sell. Even if you aren’t officially in “sales,” their quotes and observations are a joy. As a matter of fact, I first found out about Paul Potts via their site.
